Understanding BOM with the Product in mind
Bill of Materials(BOM)
When working with any product structure in teamcenter , a very commonly used term is “ bill of materials.” In this section I will explain what actually is BOM and the various information we can retrieve from it.
What is BOM?
Bill of Materials is a list that includes items, parts , assemblies etc .BOM also contains any other object that is required to create a product along with the instructions on how to assemble and configure the product.
Information regarding how to gather the parts, whether to buy it or manufacture it (make/buy) and the quantity of parts that will be required is also contained in BOM. Any additional documentation on CAD drawing , part datasheet etc are maintained in attached datasets with specific BOM level item.
Importance of BOM in creating the final product
Any product that has to be manufactured starts with creating a BOM. It is important that the BOM is always updated and in correct and completed form to achieve the desired product.
Various industries including design and engineering & manufacturing rely heavily on BOM for information and are incorporated in the final product .Any missing or incorrect data can lead to create product of lower quality or no product at all. It will also add tremendous efforts, time and money to correct the product.
There are two specific BOM called EBOM for design and engineering and MBOM for manufacturing, that we will come across commonly in teamcenter.
