Teamcenter Validation to Edit Structure Lines
Tools –> Validate Occurrence(manual validation)
Administrator can configure Teamcenter to set rules for what kind of contents are allowed in structure line .Any violation of this business rule will not add the invalid component to structure line or edit the structure line.
Validations are run automatically while creating structure, although it can be done manually (for existing structure or property update) by clicking the menu button for Validate Occurrence.
Validations & Restrictions can be summarized as below:
Restriction on Contents | Validation for Operations | |
Only certain Item types or classes may:
Properties of parent or child object should be specified or be NULL |

Edits to Structure

Adding Components
-
Copy & Paste Objects
-
-
Copying or cutting a structure line, makes it available in the clipboard .These lines can be pasted to selected structure line through Paste or Paste Special.
Item and item revisions (including parts and design), structure lines, item elements are allowed to be pasted in structure manager .
Edit–> Copy, or Copy and Edit–> Paste or Paste can also be used for Item & Item Revision(Including design and parts).
Effect of Copy Paste :
Quantity and Notes | Copied & Pasted |
Find Number | Not Copied & Pasted |
Associated Substitute List | Copied & Pasted |
Variant Condition | Not Copied & Pasted |

Quick Add
-
-
Existing component can be added in the structure directly by entering the ID .Text Box is clicked on lower left of structure manager .Enter the component id and click on to add it in selected assembly.

-
Add Component to assembly
-
-
If while adding components to structure more information needs to entered, Edit–> Add… should be used.
Following data can be entered in the opened Add dialog box:
- Component ID to be added– ID is either entered or searched -If the same Id is shared by different object type, Select Unique Item dialog is opened inside Add dialog. Select the component from this dialog.
- Revision for precise assembly.
- View Type(Comes as useful when copying component with multiple view types)
- Component or Selected Assembly can be chosen.
- Substitute components can be defined.
- Number of Occurrence
- Quantity per Occurrence
- Find Number
-
-
Create New Item/Revision
-
With write access to BOM View Revision, top-down modeling can be done by creating item/part and adding it in structure at the same time. Selecting parent assembly and choosing File New Item or File New Part will open Create Item or Create Part Dialog box respectively. Entering the required fields item/part/revision can be created and added as component under selected assembly.
-
-
Paste Special to paste a component
-
Additional data can be specified for the use of component through Paste Special. In the Paste Special Dialog box component ID(Revision) and name information is prepopulated from component in clipboard.

Restructuring Structure
Restructuring edits the manufacturing product structure .This is disabled for structure with CAD designs. Restructuring preserves derived occurrence structure and data related to it. (Depth levels move up or down, parents change, but structure remains same.)Following are encountered with restructuring operation.
Incremental change | Integrity maintained |
Variants (classic & modular) | Integrity maintained |
Structure Relationship | Integrity maintained |
Pending Edits for Structure | Must be saved before restructuring |
Absolute Occurrence attributes& data | Teamcenter displays warnings |
Restructuring actions include:
-
-
Removing/Inserting level
-
Edit –>Insert Level
Inserts the new item one level up the selected lines with quantity 1.This means selected lines becomes children of newly inserted item. Original parent becomes the branch of newly inserted item. All the selected line should share the same parent originally before insertion. All existing variant conditio ,notes ,absolute occurrence and other data of selected lines is moved down with it. Let’s say new item inserted is X
Before Insertion
After Insertion when C, D & E were selected
Edit –>Remove Or Remove
Selected line is removed and its children reattached to one level up parent line, if ‘Keep Subtree’ option is selected. Any Option of the removed line is moved up and its variant condition is merged.
Any pending edits on line with red strikethrough should be reverted before this action.
-
-
Moving a node
-
Cut and Paste the node to selected line to move the node. All substructure and occurrence data moves with the node.
Following actions can be performed at the time of pasting.
-
- Item ID and Revision ID can be changed
- View type can be changed ,if applicable
Any pending edits on line with red strikethrough should be reverted before this action.
-
-
Splitting Occurrence
-
A line representing several occurrences and having quantity value more than one can be split in two branches with Edit Split Occurrence. Both the branches will initially have same variant condition, notes and other data which can be modified independently.
-
-
Replacing Node
-
Edit –>Replace Node or
An item representing the node can be replaced with a different item preserving all data associated with the original node
-
Adding Parts to NX
Parts to be added to NX can be:
-
- Individual parts
- Parts in context of assembly
They can be copied to Teamcenter clipboard and with right click and selecting Send clipboard content to NX, they can be sent to NX clipboard .Only revisions are sent to NX.
With NX paste options ,parts are pasted in the assembly .Individual parts are pasted at default location and parts in context of assembly i.e. structure lines are pasted based on the positioning information it has from Teamcenter .This means parts will position correctly for any other selected level in NX assembly, according to its spatial information.

Editing Quantity-Unit of Measures
Unit of Measures is an attribute of an item .Quantity property of structure line is specified based on unit of measure of item .For example if unit of measure is KG , quantity can be specified as 1.8 .UOM can also be specified as each ,which will take numerical whole number in quantity field. UOM for item type can be specified and cannot be edited once it is used in structure or when item revision is released.
Fnd0PSEQtyConversionDSName and Fnd0PSEEnableQtyConversionUOM Business Modeler IDE constants can set user-defined UOM.
In Structure Manager, Edit Quantity Dialog pops up on double clicking quantity property .Here quantity can be defined in user selected UOM .Say when item default UOM is KG, user can enter 500 and UOM as gram and click on OK .This value is automatically converted and updated as 0.5 KG. In database ,quantity is stored in default UOM for item type.

Editing BOM View Revision-Save As
File–> Save As BOM View Revision
BOM View Revision stores the occurrences of single level assembly .It is generally created automatically when adding first component to an assembly .But sometime, it may be required to create or copy BOM View Revision separately when certain other view type is required of similar structure. BOM View Revision may also need to be copied, when we need to copy structure to another item.
This action of Save As will copy occurrence attributes, including the find number, notes, quantity, substitutes, and variant conditions (modular) into the new BOM view revision.
How do you change/correct the ‘Number of occurrences’ of an existing item?
Do you have to delete it from the BOM and then add it back in, in order to correct the number of occurrences and ultimately the quantity of the item?
If the component has no unit of measure, for eg. spokes and you want to create 20 spokes, then aggregate occurrence(it is single occurrence) can be created that represents 20 spokes. Aggregate Occurrence for 20 spokes can be created in Add dialog box,by defining quantity per occurrence as 20.
For existing component, quantity attribute can be modified to change number of occurrences for this component.
But, if component has unit of measures, for e.g. 1.5 kg, then aggregate occurrence cannot be created, hence conventional method of add/pack/remove has to be adopted.
